Purpose:
The Data Science Application Specialist builds and maintains data based advanced analytic applications for the business, including Manufacturing, Trading, Terminals, and Pipelines. This position reports to the Sr. Manager – Process Technology in Technical Excellence and supports the mission and purpose of Technical Excellence to deliver Strategy, Governance, Technology and Assurance. This role is responsible for support of all advanced data analytic applications including building, maintenance, and tuning as well as user support in the form of training and troubleshooting. As part of the company’s core Digital Transformation team, this position is expected to play a large part in building/deploying Machine Learning models, interfacing to other modeling platforms (Hysys, PetroSim and others) in building and deploying Process Digital Twins and the extraction of hybrid model data for use with the LP model updates.

Responsibilities:
- Work with SMEs and Refinery Technical Leadership in identifying, building, and deploying new Machine Learning (ML) applications for improved safety, operational reliability and profitability
- Maintain and improve existing Advanced Analytic (AA) models with respect to structure, accuracy and usability and periodically update/tune ML models using latest data sets
- Assist with the build, maintenance, and execution of tools used to evaluate/compare ML based models to first-principles process model output to reconciled plant data
- Champion changes to existing work processes to take advantage of ML technology in improving/optimizing operational decision making across business lines
- Train users to use ML tools to generate process insights and for process unit troubleshooting
- Train users on usage of ML ADEs and tools such as Jupyter Notebook, Google Colab, SEEQ Data Lab, Cognite Data Fusion or any future platforms/ADEs to be adopted by the company
- Assist with the valuation of ML based AA
- Hold periodic knowledge sharing meetings with stake holders across the enterprise to further the company’s knowledge and usage of ML technologies
- Interface with technology providers on new software updates, installation, and other technical issues on behalf of users
- Limited Travel will be required for this position
Skills and Qualifications:
- Must have legal authorization to work in the US on a full-time basis
- Bachelor's degree in engineering, mathematics, or computer science
- Certifications/master’s degree in data science demonstrating proficiency in AI/ML technologies
- Proven capabilities in application of data science concepts/tools to develop business solutions (preferably in refining/petrochemical problems)
- Minimum 5 years of experience within Refining and/or Chemicals industries developing/deploying data/model-based solutions using advanced process control, online optimization or advanced analytics (ML) technologies
- Minimum 2 years’ experience using, building, and maintaining ML models for Refining/Petrochemical applications
- Strong analytical/algorithmic/solution architecting skills
- Strong communication and stakeholder engagement skills
- Proven experience working with people in an operating plant
- Proven experience championing work process reform
Preferred Qualifications:
- 5-10 years’ experience in developing/deploying advanced process control, process modeling/optimization applications for the Refining and/or Chemicals industry problems
- 5 years’ experience using, building, and maintaining ML models
- Advanced degree in Chemical Engineering and/or Data Science
