Contract: Sr. Project Planner / Scheduler / Canada

Location: Calgary, Canada
The client, a large Oil & Gas midstream company, is currently seeking a Sr. Project Planner / Scheduler based out of Calgary AB. This is a long term one year contract with potential for extension, lasting until January 30, 2023


The Planner/Scheduler reports to the Manager, Project Services within the Downstream/Midstream Capital Projects department. The incumbent is assigned to support the Downstream Midstream large projects by integrating and maintaining multiple project schedules from feasibility studies through the planning and implementation phases to ensure that projects present a realistic schedule and reliable execution plans and ensuring key stakeholders are informed and aligned. This role will be working with both third-party contractors, internal clients, and presenting metrics to senior leadership and requires strong organizational, planning, analytical skills, customer service, and communication skills to align with the needs of the individual project managers and Major Projects leadership.

Throughout the life cycle of the projects, the Project Planner/Scheduler will work with various stakeholders such as: members of Project Management, Construction and Commissioning Team, Engineering, Finance, Corporate Project Services, Safety, Operations, external engineering companies, and construction contractors, and therefore will be required to understand and be able to communicate the full project scope of work.

The Planner/Scheduler will work proactively to ensure clear communication between areas to develop visibility that affords the ability to distribute work resource requirements from other departments to improve work execution and eliminate potential delays. Proactively identify gaps and peaks in work schedules and crew assignments throughout the execution of work to achieve schedule compliance.


  • Develop level I, II, III & IV integrated project schedules under the direction of the Project Manager.
  • Build & maintain the master schedule for the entire assigned small project program.
  • Integrate schedules of EPC firms and construction and establish logical work sequences to fit priorities identified by Project Execution strategy.
  • Organize and facilitate integrated project planning sessions
  • Co-ordinate with estimating and project cost specialists for cost & schedule alignment.
  • Consolidate the progress and performance reporting for the project from EPC and construction; support construction management team (CMT) for monitoring construction progress.
  • Core Planner / Scheduler activities as required including but not limited to:
    • Update and align management system documentation for the planning/scheduling function including standards, procedures, work instructions.
    • Support and align planning/scheduling function as required to support the implementation of InEight project controls system
    • Produce reports and analysis using Primavera and other system and coordinate the schedule interface between all groups as well as identifying problems and making recommendations to project managers.
    • Expand on analysis and metrics through development of PowerBI Dashboards.
    • Report baseline schedules against plan (dashboard) and provide management reports as requested by project manager.
    • Interface with supply chain management for schedule activity inclusion and progress updates.
    • Participate in developing planning/scheduling related procedures and template
    • Review schedule data, identify and acquire information needed to complete work logics to interface between all stakeholders.
    • Ensure all schedule changes are documented through change management system as per project requirement.
    • Create and present schedule basis for assigned integrated schedules.
    • Perform manpower resource loading for assigned schedules if required.
    • Participate in yearly work planning meetings with area portfolio managers.
    • Perform critical path analysis and identify and report activities which have critical or potential impact on schedule.

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering, technical, or equivalent related experience
  • Minimum of Five (5) years of Planning & Scheduling experience in the engineering, construction, project management of Oil & Gas related projects
  • Superior working knowledge of Primavera
  • Thorough knowledge of Engineering, Supply Chain, Fabrication and Construction processes as part of project execution
  • Strong knowledge of plant equipment, materials and construction processes
  • Excellent planning, time management, problem-solving and analytical skills
  • Prior involvement in project completion and turnover, and understanding of applicable requirements for successful turn over to operations
  • Proven ability to collaborate with people from various disciplines to achieve goals
  • Project Scheduler role in an Oil & Gas, refining, petrochemical or upgrading industry project environment, at offices and at construction sites
  • Development and implementation of supply chain, engineering and construction for Oil & Gas, refining, petrochemical or upgrading industry projects +5 years
  • Proven experience in the execution of brownfield projects in the Oil & Gas, refining, petrochemical or upgrading industry
  • Experience on most common scheduling software and superior experience with Primavera
  • Experience in data analysis and reporting on metrics for individual projects and as a portfolio (ex. PowerBI, InEight/HardDollar, or other software)
  • Excellent problem solving and facilitation skills with ability to plan, prioritize and deliver quality results
  • Team player with strong leadership and collaboration skills and the ability to effectively guide a project team
  • Intermediate computer skills in MS Office Products (Adobe, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook)
  • Strong results driven orientation and ability to improve processes for higher business performance
  • High attention to detail and an ability to keep information organized
  • Strong multi-tasking skills with the ability to prioritize and organize multiple concurrent assignments.
  • Exceptional skills in effectively guiding multiple teams, with competing priorities
  • Excellent business writing and oral communication skills coupled with the ability to communicate across business functions in an effective and professional manner

Nice to have:

  • Post-Secondary qualification in project management or equivalent
  • Professional Engineer or equivalent technologist designation (P. Eng, P.L (Eng))
  • Professional Management Professional (PMP)
  • Project Management Institute - Scheduling Professional designation (PMI-SP)
  • Canadian Institute of Quantity Surveyors (CIQS) PQS designation
  • Thorough understanding of Oil & Gas Refining and related operations would be an advantage
  • Experience developing and facilitating integrated planning sessions with various disciplines, exterior contractors and internal contributors
  • Ability to translate Project strategy into a Project Controls functional plan
  • Ability to think tactically and strategically with an ability to lead and manage change
