Corrosion Protection Technician / USA

Position: Cathodic Protection Technician
General Requirements: NACE Cathodic Protection Level 2 (or higher) and Coating
Inspector Level 2 (or higher) certified with at least 3 years of relevant corrosion control
experience. (Proof of current certification is required). Able to work independently, with
minimal supervision and with other team members. Has training and experience to perform
tasks listed below in the Position Duties section. Has completed OSHA 10-hour and H2S
Awareness Training. Proficient with Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel and
Outlook.

Position Duties: The following are basic duties of the position.
Perform Bi-Monthly Rectifier Inspections: Inspect rectifiers, clean and measure output on a
bi-monthly basis. Voltage and amperage outputs will be taken with a multi-meter, and Tap
settings will be read and recorded in PCS, as well as site measurement sheets, and signed by
the technician. Rectifier cabinets will be cleaned and maintained; and, locked prior to departure
from the site. Winter operations will include winterizing rectifier cabinets prone to snow
intrusion. Summer operations will include installing/changing insecticide tags. Oil immersed
rectifiers will be inspected and serviced for proper oil levels and inspected for loose or exposed
wires. Inspection reports will be entered into PCS and a Hess-provided SharePoint folder.
Provide weekly progress reports to supervisor and program manager.
Perform Annual Surveys: Evaluate the condition and output of existing Cathodic Protection
(CP) Systems. Troubleshoot and adjust CP systems to optimize system performance. Assess
existing CP test stations, bonds and rectifiers to ensure proper operation. Coordinate system
repairs. Identify any stray current interference and provide mitigation recommendations to the
CP program manager. Provide annual survey reports that include data analysis and
recommendations. Enter data into PCS and the Hess SharePoint folder. Provide weekly
progress reports to supervisor and program manager.
Perform Atmospheric Inspections: Inspect all jurisdictional assets, including pipelines,
facility-associated tanks, piping and vessels and gather data to ensure compliance with 49 CFR
Part 192 Subpart I: 459, 461, 479, 481 & 491; and 49 CFR Part 195 Subpart H: 581 & 583.
Technicians will provide recommendations to increase operational reliability, longevity, and
safety of Hess assets. Specific focus areas include: soil- to-air interfaces (transitions), pipe
supports, corrosion under insulation (CUI), high temperature assets, sweating assets, galvanic
(bi-metallic coupling), paint degradation, and wall loss. Upon completion of inspections,
technicians install unique identification tags (pin brazing or bolting) at each atmospheric location
selected for future monitoring without damaging coating systems. Technicians inspect and
photo document atmospherically exposed jurisdictional assets, identify corrosion mechanisms
and determine root causes. Data gathered is recorded in accordance with NACE SP0169-2013
& SSPC VIS-2 standards. Produce a final survey report and enter data in PCS and the Hess
SharePoint folder. Provide weekly progress reports to supervisor and program manager.
Perform Facility Assessments: In addition to the tasks performed and documentation required as listed
in the annual survey and atmospheric inspection sections, technicians will assess electrical isolation;
mapping each piping network and confirming the electrical isolation of below-ground assets with respect
to station grounding system(s) and piping entering or exiting the facility. Technicians will also confirm
that cathodic protection is applied at each facility; and that it meets the level of protection required to
effectively mitigate below- ground corrosion and extend asset life. Provide comprehensive facility
assessment reporting and recommendations as part of a facility integrity management program.
