JOB SUMMARY:  This position is responsible for ensuring the quality of analytical results generated for product certification through the coordination of the laboratory quality assurance system.  Performs periodic audits of quality assurance systems and maintains laboratory certifications.  Provides objective oversight to ensure all testers are performing their analysis following proper lab protocol. Prepares product Certificates of Quality.  Manages the LIMS system. Also serves as Laboratory Safety Officer to insure safe practices in the laboratory. Develop and maintain test methods as required to ensure adherence to EPA, ASTM, UOP, and ExxonMobil testing protocols. Assist in the maintenance and trouble-shooting of laboratory equipment as required. 

 

PRINCIPLE RESPONSIBILITIES:  include the following.  Other duties may be assigned.

 

  • Laboratory Safety Officer (LSO) reviews and revises the laboratory Health and Safety Manual, coordinates and conducts monthly safety audits of the lab and prepares and submits lab oriented safety flashes for site-wide distribution.
  • Coordinates the lab quality control program.
  • Defines QC samples to insure quality in critical areas.
  • Maintains all standard inventory including certificates of analysis.
  • Monitors QC sample frequency and status.
  • Monitors Statistical Quality Control charts and responds to out-of-control situations.
  • Manages the LIMS system.
  • Reviews all data included in final Certificate of Analysis (COA) generated by Operations prior to issuing final Certificate of Quality (COQ).
  • Prepares, sends and files Certificates of Quality.
  • Ensures all equipment calibrations are conducted and documentation maintained as appropriate Develops methods, sets up and calibrates equipment within area of expertise.
  • Reviews all equipment SQC data to ensure all equipment is operating within its established control limits and removed from service when out of control.
  • Provides technical assistance to troubleshoot equipment/testing problems and acts as liaison with equipment vendors to facilitate needed repairs.
  • Reviews and Revises the Quality Assurance Manual.
  • Reviews and revises the lab Policy/Procedures Manual and the lab Test Method Manual to maintain consistency with ongoing changes to ASTM methods.

  • Performs periodic audits of quality assurance systems and maintains laboratory certifications.
  • Conducts training of lab personnel on quality systems and manual.
  • Organizes and coordinates lab participation in Proficiency Programs and Round Robins.
  • Investigate all quality incidents to ensure all lab testing is being conducted per standards.
  • Serve as back-up LIMS data manager.
  • Serve as back-up to the Laboratory Supervisor.
  • Monitors third party lab proficiency.
 

JOB QUALIFICATIONS:   Bachelor degree in Chemistry, Biology, or related field preferred; ASQ (American Society for   Quality) certified Quality Auditor, preferred but not required.

A minimum of five years refinery laboratory experience required.  Knowledge of ASTM methods for petroleum products and lubricants required.  Competency in all elements of ISO9000 Quality Assurance and Management Standards required.  ASQ certified Quality Auditor (American Society for Quality) preferred.  Must be able to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, regulatory documents, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports, laboratory procedures, and correspondence.  Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of the organization.  Must be able to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical interference.  Must be able to analyze and interpret data.  Must possess good computer skills and be familiar with NWA, EZ-Chrome, Comply, MS Office applications, and other various software programs
