Senior Structural/Civil Engineer (Substations) / United States of America

The client is currently seeking a Senior Structural/Civil Engineer specializing in substations. This will be a permanent position in Long Beach, California working Monday-Friday 40 hours per week.

Job Experience:

Senior Civil/Structural Engineer with 20+ years’ experience in the engineering, design and layout of civil and structural systems for heavy industrial, manufacturing, oil and gas refining, utility companies, bio-pharm facilities and marine terminals. This role will have a focus on the Power and Distribution assets of the aforementioned industry sectors. As a Department Head, experience in developing and mentoring junior engineers is a must. Team building and effective communication that promotes an environment of learning is needed. Quality management of engineering packages as well as the review of other people’s work will be key to this role. Must have field experience and the ability to take junior personnel into the field for job walks and design review/development. A strong safety culture is promoted and required. Will have ultimate responsibility for the quality and timeliness of all Civil/Structural engineering deliverables.

 

Education:

B/S in Civil Engineering with a PE license is preferred

 

Technical Capabilities and Certifications:

1. Candidates must have knowledge and an understanding of the electrical design of substations.
2. Experience with discipline design codes - IBC, ASCE-7, ANSI/AISC-360, ACI-318 - at a minimum.
3. Preference will be given to candidates with experience with ASCE 113, ASCE-48, and the National Electric Safety Code (NESC).
4. A working knowledge of structural and civil design software is a must, for example: RISA, CIVIL-3D, Auto-CAD, L-Pile, and Excel spreadsheet development.
5. Must be technically competent as well as possess the ability to apply engineering reasoning and common sense to problem solving.
6. Personality/capability to work with other engineering and operational personnel at our client sites.
7. Problem-solving ability and client service orientation.
8. Demonstrated ability to work with highly technical staff and manage multiple tasks and objectives. Motivated and enthusiastic; excellent people skills and temperament; drive and ambition to set and reach challenging goals.
9. Self-starter with excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.
10. Ability to work effectively with internal team members and project managers to ensure that quality deliverables are produced each and every project.
11. Responsible for the Civil/Structural groups timely delivery of Civil and Structural Engineering related tasks as assigned, with minimal to moderate guidance, particularly in support of Electrical Substation design.
12. Ability to maintain and develop business with both existing and new/identified clients.
13. People-oriented team player.
14. Confident handling of the appropriate software for design purposes.
15. Ability and willingness to travel as needed within the continental U.S.
16. Perform structural steel, structure anchorage, and concrete foundation design.
17. Generate structural steel and concrete details.
18. Develop structural analysis model and design steel structures and equipment support foundations.
19. Ability to utilize in-house developed design and project management tools.
20. Design construction Civil drawings consisting of site plan, grading/drainage plans, and foundation plans.
21. Work with city and state inspection authorities to ensure construction packages are delivered per agreed upon schedule.
22. Assist in the preparation of calculation reports and packages, steel fabrication shop drawing review, and construction submittal review.
23. Perform drafting as needed of construction plans, steel fabrication shop drawings, and other substation physical detail drawings.
24. Assign and oversee work of designer/detailer staff to efficiently utilize availability of personnel.
25. Involved in staff and client communication pertaining to specific projects while working towards independent client contact and project management.
26. Legally authorized to work permanently in the U.S. without the need for sponsorship (proper identification required).
