Commercial and Contracts Manager - Renewables Developer

My Client is seeking a dynamic and enthusiastic Commercial and Contract Manager. You will provide assistance the GM and Project Management team, on behalf of the Owner. You will be working on various Hydro projects ranging in size of 10MW to 50MW across Uganda and Sub Saharan Africa. (French or Italian would be advantageous).

PLEASE READ: Please note that you will need to be fluent in Italian or French to be considered (preferably Italian). The nature of the JV partnership requires both these languages as Mandatory. Additional French would be advantageous but essential.


Client Profile: Renewables Developer Hydro, Wind and Solar

The role will include, but not limited to, the following responsibilities:

The main responsibilities of the role are listed below:

  • The position is Kampala based, and travel from time to time to visit sites would be required.
  • Provide general advice and guidance to the company in relation to all commercial matters with a focus on contracts and projects. Management and administration of contracts (and subcontracts) and providing support on legaland compliance projects.
  • Provide commercial and legal advice to all parts of the business and on commercial proposals, bids and transactions including PPAs.
  • Draft and negotiate contracts / proposals, while collaborating with other business teams on contract terms and pricing.
  • Prepare contract summaries for significant or high-profile deals.
  • Multi-disciplinary and include major civil, electrical and mechanical components.
  • Projects are structured on awarding two major EPC Contracts (one being the Civil contract and the other being the Electro Mechanical Contract) and may include smaller direct contracts to carry out site establishment and the like. Projects are generally awarded as full EPC contracts based on the Fidic Silver Book and are contractually structured to fulfil the requirements of a limited recourse funded project.
  • Assist to continuously enhance the contract process, contract templates and provide training to business teams.
  • Identify risks and issues that require compliance management as well as managing litigation and disputes favourably.
  • Provide commercial and contractual advice to the company's business units regarding claims, disputes and general matters.
  • Travel as required to support national and international projects.

Skills and experience

  • Bachelors Degree and/or Diploma in Quantity Surveying in engineering (preferably civil, electrical or mechanical), post graduation qualification in construction law would be an advantage.
  • Have a minimum of 10 years appropriate experience in project or construction management (experience from a hard dollar contracting environment will be well regarded).
  • Experience as a Commercial Manager or Contracts Engineer.
  • Conversant with PMBOK (Project Management Body of Knowledge) processes and procedures.
  • Capable of interpreting the contract requirements and ensuring that these are fully met by the contracting parties.
  • Experience with project finance transactions would be an advantage.
  • Experience with contract management, drafting, negotiation, and administration.
  • Solid background in contracts with the ability to draft form agreements and review, understand, synthesize, and communicate basic provisions from various types of contracts.
  • Ability to assess and manage contractual risks and communicate those risks to legal and business executives.
  • Conversant with Primavera or MS-Project scheduling.
  • High attention to detail and strong organizational skills.
  • Ability to maintain complete confidentiality and discretion in business relationships and exercise sound business judgement.
  • Able to thrive in a fast-paced, highly collaborative, multi-culture, high-performance organization.
  • Advanced level of English, both written and spoken is essential. Candidates understanding French will have an advantage.
  • Italian language skills more than likely required to be considered for this opportunity.

Location: Uganda

Salary Package: Budget - USD 75,000 - 120,000 p.a (gross) - Local taxes need to be paid.
