Job Description

General Manager

Reporting to the Contract Director, the General Manager will be responsible for managing a city wide FTTP build project. The candidate will lead and direct all members of the city project team.

  • Primary point of contact with the Client at city level. Responsible for managing the client's expectations on program delivery.
  • Direct reports are; Civils Construction Manager, Fibre manager, NRSWA manager, SHEQ auditor, QS, Admin.
  • Management of multiple work streams (civils and flex) for deploying a city wide FTTP network.
  • Deliver the program on time, through a robust management process, covering risk mitigation and programme / forecasting.
  • Management of all associated costs on the program and ensuring that cost - value reconciliation is in line with budget.
  • Provide accurate weekly reporting on progress, risks encountered and/or forecasted.
  • Monitoring, reporting and escalation of issues within the project with risk mitigation management and establishing recovery plans to minimise impact to the program.
  • Ensure accidents, incidents and near misses, quality failures and service deterioration trends are reported.
  • Ensure accurate timely forecasting and cost management, to effectively manage change and mitigate risks to minimise additional cost.
  • Manage the operational relationship with all suppliers and have monitoring in place to ensure contractual KPI's and technical specifications are adhered to and met.
  • Establish and maintain an effective relationship with key suppliers
  • A leader of Quality and H&S promotion. Managing excellent SHEQ practices with construction team and suppliers to ensure high standards are maintained.

Essential Skills:

Proven track record in delivering medium to large multi-site client projects with experience of managing capital budgets extending to £15M p.a.

  • Strong leadership skills and ability to set good example to others.
  • Excellent presentation skills and ability to present to senior management, clients and stakeholders
  • Ability to negotiate suitable outcomes that mitigate project risk.
  • Good working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, Powerpoint and MS Project.
  • Good technical understanding of telecoms fibre optic networks.
  • Demonstrable experience of method statements and risk assessments
  • Commercial Awareness - understands basic revenue models, P&L, and cost-to-completion projections
  • Ability to demonstrate experience and working knowledge of CDM Regulations
  • Understanding of the New Roads & Streetworks Act 1991 (NRSWA)
  • Experience of recognised project management methodology

    Desirable
  • Knowledge of NEC3 ECC form of contract desirable.

    Qualifications :

    Essential
  • 7 years' General Management experience, preferably gained within a telecoms environment.
  • Institution of occupational Safety and Health (IOSH) - Managing Safely
  • Full Clean Driving Licence.

  • Civil Engineering qualifications
  • Fibre Optic qualifications

Suitable Project management qualifications e.g. Prince 2 Practitioner or AP
